See more BadNews R @TheMovieSearch Sep 15 Snow White and the Huntsman set out to reinvent a classic fairy tale, turning Snow White into a warrior destined to save her kingdom. On paper, the idea of taking such a well-known story and giving it an epic, action-driven spin sounds bold and refreshing. In execution, though, it ended up feeling uneven, weighed down by both casting missteps and a story that strayed too far from the heart of the original. Kristen Stewart as Snow White was the biggest gamble of the film—and unfortunately, it’s a gamble that didn’t pay off. Much like the recent decision to cast Rachel Zegler in the same role, it just didn’t fit. Stewart brought neither the warmth nor the commanding presence that Snow White needed in this darker reimagining. Instead, her performance felt flat, which is especially noticeable in a film that hinges on the audience believing her transformation into a heroic leader. Charlize Theron, on the other hand, delivered exactly what was needed as the Evil Queen. She was magnetic every time she appeared on screen, embodying menace, vanity, and raw power with ease. She was the anchor of the movie, giving it a sense of gravitas that no one else quite matched. Chris Hemsworth, stepping outside of his Marvel fame, was cast as the Huntsman and set up as Snow White’s protector and eventual partner. While he wasn’t outright bad, his performance lacked spark—it felt serviceable rather than memorable. His chemistry with Stewart was lukewarm, and the role itself never allowed him to truly shine. The film’s biggest flaw lies in its story and tone. The relentless focus on action, battle sequences, and female empowerment stripped away the fairy-tale magic that should have grounded the film. Don’t get me wrong—Disney princesses and fairy-tale heroines can be warriors. Mulan, Moana, and Raya prove this beautifully because their stories were built that way from the ground up. But when you take established characters like Snow White or Cinderella and completely rewire them into battlefield leaders, it feels forced and disconnected from their origins. Instead of feeling empowering, it feels like the film is trying too hard to modernize at the cost of its soul. That said, Snow White and the Huntsman isn’t a disaster. It’s not unwatchable, and I didn’t hate it. It has moments of spectacle, impressive visuals, and of course, Theron’s commanding presence to keep it from collapsing. But it also isn’t great—it’s the kind of movie you watch once, acknowledge for the attempt, and then move on without much desire to revisit. Ultimately, the film tried to be both a gritty fantasy epic and a reimagined fairy tale, but it got lost somewhere in between. It played its part for the audience it was aiming for, but as a lasting reimagining of the Snow White story, it fell short. A visual spectacle with fantastic performances to boot, particularly from figures such as Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. The hate for Kristen Stewart's acting is unfounded, as it was perfectly fine for the role she was playing. From the beginning right up until about 3/4 of the way into the movie, they had a superb theme of peace and restoration going on, and Snow White's character was focused on being a healing and inspiring figure who hated the idea of hurting anything. It was great until they decided she needed to go girlboss in the end, destroying the flat character arc she performed so well in favor of making her awesome. She actively tries to kill the queen, something she would never have done early on in the film. If that's the arc they were going for, they failed. Overall, it was a very enjoyable watch with incredible visual effects and choreography for the fight scenes. I would recommend it for those things, though I wish the story had been consistent. The setting, plot, costumes, and characters were all intriguing and thoughtful, making you feel completely immersed in this fantasy world. I loved the slightly darker aspect of it that makes it so unique and way more fun to watch than any of the other snow white adaptations that are out right now. The sets added so much to the immersive nature of the movie, and the costumes were so great. They mirrored the cartoon version of snow white's costume with the puffed sleeves, but also added that grittier feel with the pants and cut skirt. The costume designer, Colleen Atwood, also absolutely popped off with Ravenna's dresses. Loved watching this with my friends and again with my family. The actors and actresses all did a fantastic job and its such a good movie. See more Read all reviews
